Video XPENG's IRON robot crossed the uncanny valley, leading some to believe it was a human in a suit. So they cut it open in front of an audience, and also allowed journalists to inspect it.

So boobs when dressed, no boobs when undressed. So robots wear padded bras too now?

1.0k

u/majandess 18h ago

It's in case they fall forward. Extra padding. /s

426

u/Plenty-Vegetable-640 15h ago

You’re jesting, but that would be a very smart way to pad them without making them awkward/less human like

114

u/Jat616 10h ago

Sod that, give them a mattress chest! Enough robots in circulation would mean we'd never be without a comfy seat again! We could revolutionise napping!!!

Never thought obesity could be possible in humanoid robots.

The naked version doesn’t have.them. And if you’re trying to convince an audience it isn’t a person in a robot suit, why cut the leg vs say removing its faceplate?

u/BluetheNerd 18h ago

Yeah when I read they cut open the suit to prove I thought it would be like, the whole thing, torso and all. Just a leg, below the knee when a lot of amputees have prosthetics that help them walk, is a bit sus.

The demonstration without the suit also has a harness in case it falls over, which I get you want during testing so you don't wreck a prototype you've been working on for that long, but the only time we see it without the harness is when it isn't actually proven to not be a person in a suit.

233

u/Xentonian 17h ago

It's actually crazy to me what a terrible job they've done at assuaging suspicions.

If somebody just showed me a robot walking, I'd be like

Yup, it's 2025. This isn't very impressive. I thought we had these for a while. Good job though, love the robo boobs.

Y'know, I'd easily be 100% convinced this was a robot without needing even one second of reassurance.

Instead, they keep showing these little meaningless cutaways like

seee! Here's a robot ankle. People in suits can't have robot ankles! Look, here's 5cm of its back with a little flashing light. No way could a human being have a plate with a flashing light on their back. What do you mean just take off the suit? No... No need to do that. Trust us. The journalists saw it! They said it was real! Wait wait wait here's the bottom half without a suit, please ignore the giant device holding it up with puppeteering strings!

And now I'm only... 70% sure this is a robot.

85

u/b__q 16h ago

I think it's good marketing tbh. The fact that people still believes it's a human in a suit makes them go like "see! this robot is that convincing!"

Also more people is talking about it.

32

u/Xentonian 15h ago

What a scam hahaha. You're probably right.

85

u/Apprehensive_Eraser 18h ago

There's another video where they show the back

107

u/Ragnarsworld 17h ago

Yeah, they show a plastic/metal plate with a light blinking. That could easily be just a plate with a light affixed to someone's back.

126

u/moritashun 16h ago

like , i want to believe them, but the way they 'debunk' any accusation just create more sus. Like they are cautiously slow when revealing , and even when they reveal the back, they show very little and only for a very little time, it feels like magician showing you something at a certain angle, or a child lying to you.

→ More replies (13)
→ More replies (5)

170

u/eirc 17h ago

These videos are only increasing my suspicions. At first I was not suspicious at all. I find it very plausible that human walking can be recreated on a machine.

Then they're like "we'll prove it's real" and cut off half a leg under the knee. There's plenty of amputees or short people that can walk. Then they cut the back and show a half blurry video that just shows a couple surface level blinking lights. Again a human can definitely fit in there with all that tech behind them. Then there's the naked version video that only shows the bottom part of the robot, which could easily be hanging from a "puppeteering" device up above. And also there's the dozens of similar reddit posts with the same kind of titles.

I'll just reserve judgement for a bit.

60

u/Vast-Seesaw-4956 17h ago

It's true. I'm short and can still walk.

u/Mdub74 16h ago edited 14h ago

As sus as you seem to be, when you mentioned 'they only show the bottom part of the robot' i thought you were going to say 'there are plenty of amputees that could pull that off' and my big toeless MIL would laughed and laughed 😅

8

u/Bravardi_B 16h ago

Yeah what seems odd to me is the way it steps on the left leg that they expose. Seems to step just like a person with an amputated lower leg.

11

u/FloppySlapper 14h ago

They also only show one leg, not both. When they slightly pulled up the one pant leg but not the other, that was my first thought. And in the previous video where they show the back, they only open the suit far enough to show the most narrow region of the back. It's not the sort of demonstration you give when you're trying to show something, it's the sort of demonstration you give when you're trying to hide something.

Magicians doing stage shows show more of their tricks than this.

19

u/FartBrick1 17h ago

They let journalists see it later by removing the back. Not sure why they cut the leg coating off like this.

20

u/hexitor 17h ago

Can they prove it wasn’t some bodyless head in a suit?

12

u/Coneyy 17h ago

And even then they wouldn't be able to convince me that the robot mind controlling the device isn't essentially a human consciousness trapped inside a robotic shell. So it's a scam all the way through to the core, and no evidence will change my mind. /s incase it wasn't obvious

worst thing happening with robotics is trying to make it human...

just make it BETTER, get rid of the bad stuff, like the legs...

128

u/Regular-Engineer-686 18h ago

There’s actually 2 very good reasons why they make robots look like humans:

  1. Technical
  2. Psychological

See, the world around us is built for humans. Robots have to open up cabinets, doors, walk upstairs, put clothes in the washer and dryer - all things that are built for the average human to actually do.

And then the second thing is psychological. We identify with things that look like us - even animals. We identify with animals because they typically have two eyes, a nose, and a mouth. The more they make robots look like humans, the less scared that we will actually be because we can identify with what we're looking at.

30

u/ManaSpike 17h ago

Arthur C Clark used to think we'd have an android in our kitchen cooking meals.

Instead we have industrial kitchen / production lines producing thousands of pre-prepared meals you can pickup at your local store.

From an engineering standpoint wheels, tracks, crab legs, etc, are all far better than human bipedal motion as they're all far more stable. The human walk cycle is effectively a series of controlled falls

58

It walking that well is impressive, our body is doing a lot to balance and its not easy, there's a lot of on the fly processing that we do inherently since we got the hang of it before memory.... there's a lot of on the fly processing so that is impressive.

But the title is exagerating by and far, its still uncanny, mechanical, and comes off like some amatur Steam Powered Giraffe wannabe.

I can still hear Arnie with his austrian accent "Living human tissue over the exoskeleton!!".

But, this would actually be a step more, like when robots get better and then you replace such outer things like latex skin with real human tissue.

Does it do anything but walk?  I mean walking is cool but for a robot to be useful it needs to actually do something with its hands.

u/PeaInfamous9144 17h ago

When entering the stage, the walk looks way more mechanic on the left leg than on the right. The "naked" robot seems faster and has a different walking style, somehow. But maybe I am just wrong...

If anything, it crossed into the uncanny valley. Normally robots look like and mov like robots. This robot tries to - but doesn't fully succeed to - move like a human, making it uncanny.

That's where we poke the uncanniness in our brains. Alarm bells going "something's wrong".

Super impressive, especially how little of the 'robot' they actually revealed. Why not remove the face plate? Or show it's torso? You know, any part that could not have easily been a prosthetic of the person under the boobed robot disguise?

Looks like someone with a leg amputation walking across stage. The video with the robot completely uncovered has a huge power cord attached. IDK I'm unconvinced

u/FraGough 17h ago

The tethered one has a different gait too.

u/Dev1_E 12h ago

Hot take. We could make robots to look like ANYTHING. Let's NOT make them look like people.

This was clearly a last-minute thought to show it wasn't just a person, and not an intended part of the show.

If they had intended to do that, they would have just made it so the whole "skin" could get pulled off. Since it's clearly just fabric with shaped padding underneath, at least on the leg part that they cut off.

Since it's just the leg, and the gait of the untethered figure does not match the gait of the tethered bot, I don't buy it.

u/Rock3tDoge 16h ago

Why did we have to make human replicas. Why can’t we build robots that at least walk slightly different than us. Are we actively trying to rush to a place where they can hide in plain sight
